The Next Chapter
The Flanders region shows a clear tension in later-life housing. While older residents generally prefer to age in place (Wiles et al., 2012), the housing stock is often poorly suited to later-life needs. Only 14% live in adapted housing, while 37% live in severely unsuitable housing (SERV, 2024). Delayed action compounds the issue, with 65% of Belgians aged 60+ reporting they have not prepared for later life (King Baudouin Foundation).
There is also a broader housing-system concern: if older residents are supported to move into homes that better fit their later-life needs, larger under-occupied homes may become available for households who need them.
The Challenge
The challenge is not just to persuade people to move, but to support earlier, better-informed, and emotionally acceptable housing decisions before a crisis forces the choice. This project aimed at supporting people aged 55-67 to begin planning their future housing by reframing moving as a positive transition rather than signalling loss.
“I should have done it so much earlier.”
How might we support people aged 55-67 to begin planning their future housing by reframing moving as a positive transition rather than signalling loss?
Our Service:
The Next Chapter Workshop
The Next Chapter is a guided workshop designed to help people aged 55–65 reflect on the next stage of their lives and consider whether their current home will continue to support the future they want.
Rather than encouraging participants to move, the workshop provides a safe space for reflection and discussion, gently introducing the idea that their housing needs may change over time while learning from people who have already experienced a housing transition.
Artefact One:
The Next Chapter Booklet
A take-home workbook that guides participants through the workshop, helping them imagine their future, reflect on how their current home supports it, and identify their next step, serving as a conversation starter.
Artefact Two:
Workshop Facilitation Guide
A step-by-step guide to help facilitators deliver the workshop consistently while adapting it to their participants.
Artefact Three: The Online Repository
Linked via the QR code in the booklet, the website becomes a one-stop resource for housing options, costs, testimonials, and practical guidance, helping participants continue exploring at their own pace.
